Drive Higher Returns From Your Tech Portfolio

QStart Labs was born inside a venture firm — we started in 2008 as NCT Ventures' in-house technology team. Today we do for your portfolio what we did for theirs: vet the technology before you invest, give portfolio companies a senior product team after, and protect the technical story all the way to exit.

Where Investors Lose Money on Technology

Technical risk you can't see from a pitch deck

You can diligence the market, the founder, and the financials — but the product itself is usually taken on faith. We read the actual code, architecture, and infrastructure before you wire funds, and report what we find in plain English, risks ranked.

Runway burned on the wrong build

First-time founders overbuild, over-hire, and rebuild. A senior team that has launched 100+ startups ships the version the market actually needs — so your capital shows up as product and traction, not payroll and rework.

The CTO gap

Pre-seed through Series A companies rarely can attract — or afford — senior technical leadership. We act as the fractional product and engineering organization, so the founder can sell and raise while the technology is handled.

One Partner Across the Investment Lifecycle

From the data room to the exit table.

  1. Before you invest

Technical diligence on the deal: architecture, code quality, security, IP ownership, and how dependent the product is on any one person. You get a risk-ranked, plain-English report you can price into terms.

  2. After the check clears

We turn the plan into a build: an MVP Roadmapping Workshop where the idea is still forming, then scoped phases with estimates the board can hold us to.

  3. As the company scales

A senior team on demand — build, host, monitor, support. The company pays for development when it needs development, not for idle internal overhead.

  4. At exit

Documented systems, clean IP, and a technical story that survives buyer diligence. We've carried partner companies through five exits, and we know what acquirers dig for.

Aligned by design. Our engagement models came out of the venture world: Market Rate when a company wants a clean vendor relationship, and Partner Rate when it makes mutual sense to trade fees for a stake in the upside. Both are laid out in our Pricing Guide.

Case Study

The Embedded Team Behind a Category-Leading Marketplace

DOmedia connects advertising agencies with out-of-home media inventory across the US and Canada. Our engineers work inside their technology organization — platform development, API integrations, and new product lines — giving the company senior capacity that flexes with the roadmap instead of sitting on the payroll.

What Investors Say

QStart Labs is the first technology company that actually aligns their interest to us as investors. Their business model allows NCT to increase speed-to-market and enhance our ROI. We particularly like that QStart Labs is incentivized to help make our portfolio companies successful, and that we incur costs only when development is needed vs. internal overhead.

Become a Vetted Provider Partner

For funds, accelerators, and economic development organizations that keep a screened list of technology providers for their founders.

A team that survives your diligence

Senior, US-based engineers — no offshore hand-off after the sales call. AWS Select Tier Partner, with production systems running in AWS GovCloud under CJIS. Your founders get the firm you would use yourself, not the one that answered the RFP fastest.

Pricing built for pre-revenue companies

Market Rate when a company wants a clean vendor relationship it owns outright, and Partner Rate when it makes sense to trade fees for equity or revenue share. A cohort company that cannot afford a full build still has a path to one.

Accountability back to you

Scoped phases with estimates a board can hold us to, and a named point of contact at your organization. If an engagement with one of your companies goes sideways, you hear it from us before you hear it from them.

How it works

What we ask for
A place on the provider list your founders actually see, and an introduction when a company in your portfolio or cohort has a build in front of it.
What you get
A discovery call and a written scope for any referred company at no cost, whether or not they engage us — so your founders get a real second opinion either way.
What it costs
Nothing, in either direction. No referral fees, no exclusivity, no minimum volume. If we are not the right fit for one of your companies, we will say so and point them elsewhere.

Already in the ecosystem: we sponsor Bold VC's Founder Summit, Accelerating Angels' FundHER Biz, and the Ohio Angel Collective's annual holiday party. See our community involvement.

Investor FAQ

Yes. We work as a screened technology provider for firms and programs that maintain a vetted list for their founders — the kind of referral where your name is attached to the outcome. QStart Labs was itself a venture firm's in-house engineering team from 2008 to 2016, so we understand what it costs you when a recommended vendor underdelivers. Partnerships are non-exclusive, carry no referral fee in either direction, and start with a conversation rather than paperwork.
We review the architecture, code quality, security posture, scalability, IP ownership, and how much of the product lives in one person's head — then deliver a plain-English report with findings ranked by risk and rough remediation costs attached. That turns technical unknowns into things you can price, negotiate, or condition the round on.
Yes — that's the model we were born into. QStart Labs started as NCT Ventures' in-house technology team, supporting their whole portfolio: shared senior talent across companies, with each company paying only for the development it actually uses instead of carrying a full-time team.
Whichever the company needs. We've been the entire product and engineering organization for companies with no technical staff, embedded engineers inside an existing team, and taken over stewardship of a codebase when a technical co-founder left. The engagement is shaped around the company, not around our packaging.
Two ways to work with us: Market Rate, where the company pays standard rates and owns everything outright, and Partner Rate, where we discount our services in exchange for equity or revenue share when we believe in the business. The Partner Rate model came directly out of our venture origins — we do better when the company exits well. Details are in our Pricing Guide.
The technology helps the deal instead of haunting it. Because we document as we build and keep IP ownership clean, buyer diligence finds an orderly codebase, reproducible infrastructure, and no licensing surprises. We've supported five exits and sat through the diligence that came with them.
No — we're a software engineering firm, not a fund, so we never compete with your allocation. What we invest is work: under the Partner Rate model we trade fees for a stake in the upside. Your capital buys product; our incentives stay pointed at the same exit yours are.
